BREAKING: Supreme Court Upholds Federal Abortion Ban

We're fucked:

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the federal Partial Birth Abortion Act, a ban on an abortion procedure that the Republican controlled Congress passed in 2003. This ban has no exception for the health of a pregnant woman.

Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal issued a statement this morning, saying, "This ruling shows the true colors of the current Bush-stacked majority of the Supreme Court: it does not care about the health, well-being, and safety of American women. This must serve as a wake-up call to women: we are losing our fundamental rights as Bush continues to stack the courts. Elections matter: this is the consequence of a Republican, ideologically driven president and Congress."

While Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority decision on behalf of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Antonin Scalia, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote a dissenting opinion, calling today's decision "alarming" because "For the first time since Roe, the Court blesses a prohibition with no exception protecting a woman's health."

Said Eve Gartner of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America: “This ruling flies in the face of 30 years of Supreme Court precedent and the best interest of women’s health and safety. ... This ruling tells women that politicians, not doctors, will make their health care decisions for them.”

Our personal rights and liberties are slipping away from us people. Maybe you don't like abortion, hell I don't know who does. Think bigger, folks. This is just another attack in the long line of oppressive decisions that restrict, if not completely eliminate personal freedoms. Government intrusion into your life, your home, your liberty is at stake. Last year in South Dakota, the legislature lost its attempt to outlaw abortion because, although many people disagreed with abortion, they disagreed more with government meddling into their lives and their decisions. Get off your asses, quit bitching and do something or before you know it, what you hold dear and true will be gone as well. And then what? Who will help you? Who will help you when its too late, when they've taken away your voice, your rights?

This is a clarion call for feminists, progressives and everyone who cares about justice, equality and democracy. We must link arms and say "No more."

We MUST elect a Congress that will repeal this ban and a president who will sign the repeal.

November 2008 can't come soon enough.
