UN Announces Woman As General Assembly President

Last Thursday, the UN took an important step towards supporting greater equality for women by electing a woman to serve as General Assembly President!

Her name is Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa and she is a pioneering lawyer and women's rights advocate from Bahrain.

She is also the first woman from the Middle East to take the post. Click here to read a news story about her election.

Although this is a very positive development there is still a long way to go to achieve truly balanced global leadership that represents women equally.

The UN is a critically important international body with incredible potential to help advance the status of women worldwide.

That's why asking the UN to make history in 2006 by choosing a woman to serve as its leader, the Secretary-General, for the first time in its 60-year history.
